Joulupukkis were initially thought of as evil men who demanded respect from children. Legend has it that these figures had a malevolent, goat-like appearance that would scare innocent children during Christmas. The modern version of the Joulupukki depicts an aged man wearing a red, goat-skinned fur coat, with an uncanny resemblance to the traditional Santa Claus. Joulupukki, also known as Santa Claus or The Yule Goat, is the main antagonist of the 2010 Finnish comedy-horror film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. Lured onto a frozen lake and trapped in ice hundreds of years ago, the Joulupukki has been waiting for centuries for its followers to thaw it out so that it may continue its reign of terror.

Joulupukki goat

Joulupukki is a Finnish Christmas figure. The name joulupukki literally means "Christmas goat" or "Yule Goat" in Finnish; the word pukki comes from the Teutonic root bock, which is a cognate of the English "buck", and means "billy-goat". An old Scandinavian custom, the figure is now being eventually conflated with Santa Claus. The goat was then replaced by the jultomte (Father Christmas/Santa Claus) or julenisse during the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, although he is still called the Joulupukki (Yule goat) in Finland, and the tradition of the man-sized goat disappeared. The modern Yule goat Joulupukki translates to “Yule Goat.” Yule, a pre-Christian pagan festival, was a midwinter celebration with feasting and sacrifice that took place in many Germanic cultures. So what do goats have to do with it? While sadly there’s no definitive answer, the most popular theory suggests that goats are linked to the god Thor.
