The mines were in operation from 1881 to 1899. During these years a total of 12,000 tonnes of zinc ore were extracted. Today, the mining area is a museum. The plain buildings in the gorge are designed in an industrial construction style to embody the story of the mines. The story of the mines begins in 1881 when tenant farmer Gregorius Hansen Birkeland discovers zink, iron and copper ore in the ravine. In 1882 Saude Grubecompagni (Saude Mining Company) starts a mining operation with a workforce of 20 men.
